My Big Fat Handmade Diary - July 2013

July 29, 2013
Ouch! I dropped my cell phone in the water by accident yesterday. Although I immediately took it out and dried it up, and put it in the uncooked rice overnight, it still can't be turn on today... just asked Rogers and they "suggested" me to upgrate my device....
ouch! ouch! ouch!

McLobster sandwish used to be available only in East coast of Canada but this year, it's also available in Ontario! Tastes good, but kind of expensive.
A McLobster combo costs CAD8.99

July 25, 2013
Infused 1 liter of Tension-Free Formula tea ("Medicinal Herbs, by Rosemary Gladstar, p210). Original formula is valerian root + hawthorn berry + lemon balm leaf, I don't have lemon balm leaf, so I added licorice root instead. Licorice root gives it a touch of sweetness, tastes good, smells good, too. Several minutes later, kinda amazed at what I felt, relax...(not sleepy). ;-)

Unmold the sample size (6.5cm x 4.5cm x 1.5cm) castor soap today. It's still a bit sticky so the edges do not look as nice as the big soap loaf. See how it refracts the light, lovin' it.

Realy love this crystal clear soap!
I heard the crystal translucence will become frosty as time goes by.
But when using it, it will turn to crystal clear again.
So interesting! Can't wait to try it.

A super good buy at Costco. CK boy's briefs, CAD8.99/6pack (girl's are also available, same price). My boys love them, very comfortable to wear.
I am going to stock more as they are going quickly!

The aloe vera I planted months ago is now big and fat! Cut some juicy leaves and wanted to make aloe infused oil. I carefully cut out the green outer leaf and put the inner clear jelly in organic olive oil. My hands coated with the gooey aloe gel, perfect timing for a 100% pure aloe facial, ha. ;)

Unmold the castor shampoo soap today. It's still translucent,
but contains lots of little bubbles inside of the soap, just like champagne! :D

A heart warming flash mob chorus performance of popular Taiwanese and Chinese songs in the food court of Taipei 101, Taiwan.

The songs performed are: Green Island Serenade (lv-dao-xiao-ye-qu), Jasmine (mo-li-hua), Spring Breeze (wang-chun-feng) and Mountain is Green (gao-shan-qing).

The motivation of this event is to show the beauty of Taiwan, its songs, places, and people, to the world.

Enjoy. =)

Made 3 batches of soaps last night. One of them is a new shampoo soap.
It contains large portion of castor oil and turned out crystal translucence.
They are on the curing rack and will be ready in September. =)

Kids requested for more biscotti treats, so I made some. =)

Labeled the little jars of Blueberry Banana Jam.
They are gonna be little gifts to my lovely girl friends.

Shared a cute note I found today on eHow. ;-)

It's 44c today (hot!). I stayed at home almost whole day and made some natural products:

1. A cup of herbal oil (calendula, comfrey & plantain infused) with strong herbal smell and dark green color. This is for making "Black Drawing Salve...
".
2. Sundried sage leaves.
3. Three small jars of Blueberry Banana Jam. They are gifts for my friends.
4. Four jars of tinctures: wormwood, yarrow, valerian & echinecea.

Now, I need a big scoop of ice cream to cool down, I'm melting...

Blueberry Banana Jam!
This batch is set perfectly, not too sticky nor too watery.
My first time try the combination of blueberry and banana, tastes really good.
Love the combination. :)

I tried the DIY powder laundry detergent and I am telling you I LOVE IT!!!! It works so well to my HE front loader!!!! I just used 2 spoonful (take-out plastic spoon) of it and that's good enough to clean a full load of laundry! Not only those clothes but also the washer and the laundry room smell sooooo refreshing! This good stuff makes laundry more fun! ;-)
PS. My recipe is from

Making homemade washing soda by baking baking soda.
Thank you Julia Lock and Emily for the tips! =)

DIY powder laundry detergent.
Did a lot of researches, hopefully it will work on my HE front loading washer.

Biscotti is perfectly paired with black coffee! :)

Baked "Almond Cranberry Biscotti" for our girl's party today.

Having ice cream dessert with kids after the movie.
Enjoying the moment with them.

Field trip this week : watching movie.
We're watching [Despicable Me 2], not the meatball one.

Macerating "Strawberry & Lychee with Vanilla".
Oh boy, this batch smells so good.
The vanilla bean gives it a touch of sweet aroma and richer flavor.
I have to stop the desire of licking the mixing spoon.

Do you like Mojito? It became my hubby's most favorite cocktail after our Cuba trip. He loves to make one glass of it almost everyday, so you can tell our rum run out quickly. Luckily, we've got friends who just came back from Cuba this week and gonna supply him with couple bottles of Cuban rum. He can't wait, I know.

Teaching kids Chinese.
This is what they learned in the first week of summer vacation :
writing their Chinese names.

It's been raining for days, finally we had a little bit of sunshine today. It's not a nice and dry weather but both me and kids couldn't wait. We hurried to Andrews'  Scenic Acres for strawberry picking!

After 2 hours of muddy, humid and hard works,
a small basket of fresh strawberries! =)

July 04, 2013
Jam of the day : Strawberry, Blueberry & Raspberry jam.
1200g fresh fruits + 720g sugar + 72g lemon juice (good for 450g jar x 3).
This batch is also more watery and takes longer time to evaporate the moisture of the jam.

Voila! My 3rd batch of jam.
(yeah, I am a perserve freak now)

Guess what I am making today? :)

After the herbal infused coconut oil firmed up in the fridge, I cut those foil wrapped tubes to about 3cm long, and shaped each solid oil piece like a mini tampon shown in the photo below. Did you guess it right? Yes, they are suppositories. ;-)

Trying different combinations...
This one is "diamond ring + coin"
meaning both "love + bread" are all yours.
Good one? lol

July 01, 2013

Earlier, I was making strawberry jam.

I love jam with whole berries, you?

    1. Thanks Jessie. The foil wrapped suppositories work great! I was thinking to buy those disposable suppository molds before making the suppositories. Then I read about how to make your own foil tubes in James Green's book (The Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook, p221). Great method! Please give it a try! ;)
